Tesco’s derelict buildings to be demolished

Cllr John Lawson and Cllr Andrew Pinnock talking to a local resident about Tesco’s derelict buildings.

Tesco announced earlier this year that they intended to abandon their application to build a replacement store in Cleckheaton. This was to replace the current one which was built 40 years ago and is cramped and not a good shopping experience.
As part of their now abandoned plans, Tesco bought land and mill buildings on the other side of Serpentine Road. These are now derelict with stone roof slates stolen, windows broken, and all metal internally stripped out. The site is a disgraceful eyesore in the heart of our town. And the responsibility of Tesco.

So it is great to learn today that Tesco have taken steps to demolish the buildings. A demolition contractor has applied to start demolition on 30th September.

Liberal Democrat councillor for Cleckheaton, John Lawson, said, “I am delighted that Tesco are taking their responsibilities to our town seriously. Getting these now dangerous buildings flattened is fantastic news.”
