There has been a very large and very deep hole dug in Westgate near the junction with Tofts Road.
Many residents have been asking why it is taking so long as the work is causing traffic delays on this busy road.
This is what I have found out so far:
* the work is to replace the very large gas supply mains – hence the deep hole;
* from this hole lengths of gas main are being replaced along Westgate;
* the site has to be left with no-one working in it to make sure that all gas disperses before the next stage for safety reasons;
* this is part of a programme of work which moves closer to the town centre in the summer.
* the work is essential because there have been a number of minor gas leaks in the area and so the safest action is to replace the old pipework.
