Tory Councillors delay schools decision

by Kath Pinnock on 18 November, 2010

The action of Conservative Councillors in Gomersal and Birkenshaw has caused yet another delay to the schools decisions  in Cleckheaton.

On November 9th, the Council’s Cabinet made the decision to create primary schools in Cleckheaton, Scholes and Gomersal. The Council has £6 million this financial year to make those changes. The Cabinet decided that the the schools in the worse state of repair would get the investment first. Hence the decision to invest in Scholes and Whitechapel. Both these buildings were built 40 years ago and desperately need to be re-furbished.

Conservative councillors have asked for the decision to be “called in” for the scrutiny committee to investigate. This is not about the main decision to create primary schools but about the phasing of the investment in the primary schools. This will cause further unwarranted delay and create more uncertainty for local parents and school staff.

Any good councillor would have asked all those questions BEFORE the decision was taken by Cabinet and been an advocate for the schools in their ward.
