Decision sees end of Middle Schools

by Kath Pinnock on 11 November, 2010

Kirklees Council met on November 9th and decided that middle schools in the Cleckheaton and Gomersal areas will be phased out. Children will go to primary schools and at age 11 got to Whitcliffe Mount High School.

The Council has decided to invest £6 million to make new primary schools in Cleckheaton. There will be new classrooms and some improvements at Scholes at a cost of £2 million. St Lukes and Moorend will come together to form a new primary school on the site of Whitechapel Middle. £3 million is to be spent on that building to make it “as good as new”. Heaton Avenue will move to the West End middle site and £1 million will be spent making the older part of the building into a Nursery & Reception unit.

Our middle schools have served us well in Cleckheaton and many people will have happy memories of their middle school days. Now the decision has been made after nearly 4 years of consultation, discussion and campaigning. I am sure everyone will work hard together to make the new schools “outstanding” for our local children.
