LOCAL PEOPLE AGREE – SPEN VALLEY MUST HAVE A SPORTS CENTRE

by Kath Pinnock on 27 April, 2016

Over 3,000 local people signed a petition demanding that Kirklees Council provide a Sports Centre in Cleckheaton. Some want the existing building to be retained. Some would like to see a new sports centre built next to the new Whitcliffe Mount school sports hall when that is built later this year.

Whatever the differing views what everyone agrees is that the Spen valley must have an indoor sports centre.

Time and again Labour-run Kirklees Council has refused proposals to build a new community sports centre. The consequence is that the Spen Valley with its 50,000 residents will be the only area of Kirklees which will have NO sports centre.

Labour are proposing, instead, to build a fitness suite with a small space for an exercise studio. This is NOT a sports centre.

The Labour Council have written to campaigners suggesting that residents wanting the use of a sports centre should go to the one in Bradford that has not yet been built!! Below is text from that letter.

Sports Centre use Bradford text let 020316

In the letter from Kirklees Council lawyers of 2 March 2016 it states that people in the Spen Valley can travel to “alternative provision within Bradford (Sedburgh Playing Fields)(less than 4 miles away) where a new leisure facility is to open and be available to Kirklees residents.”

So now we have the facts. Labour do NOT intend to build a sports centre for the Spen Valley.
